In recent years Iran is one of the leading Countries in Date production in the world, with annual production of about 900000 metric tons. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, there are more than 400 species of date all over Iran but just a few of them have commercial value. Each part of Iran has a suitable climate for producing special sort of dates. Kerman province is the center for three sorts of dates which are Mazafati, Klute and Farehkon. Other provinces like Hormozgan, Khuzestan and Bushehr are suitable for other sorts like Piarom, Sayer, Kabkab and Zahedi.


Direct consumption – snacking and table eating. Dates can be eaten in their raw form, or may be seeded and stuffed, or chopped for use in cereals, puddings, bread, cakes, cookies, ice cream and candy bars. Another dates production is made into cubes, pastes, spread, powder (dates sugar), jam, jelly, juice, dates syrup, vinegar and alcohol.


Dates provide a wide range of essential nutrients, and are a very good source of dietary potassium. The sugar content of ripe dates is about 80%; the remainder consists of protein, fiber, and trace elements including boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc. Date products:

1) Mazafati

Mazafati is indigenous to BAM in KERMAN-Iran. Mazafati dates, native to BAM, is regarded as the leading in the domestic market in Iran. It’s also known as Bam dates and Kimia dates. This date is grown in the township of BAM in KERMAN province. Mazafati dates are dark, soft, fleshy, sweet and succulent. They are a medium sized date, typically around 2.5-4. 5cm.Its moisture depending on harvest time and planting area is between 15% to 35%.


Mazafati dates reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure and prevent heart disease.
Mazafati dates are useful for strengthening the gums and teeth of children.
Mazafati dates contain some vitamins, especially vitamin B5 that is essential to have healthy hair

2) Piarom

Piarom dates are unique in taste and appearance and are considered one of the most expensive varieties of date as their production is exclusive to Hajiabad. Piarom dates, also known as chocolate dates The date is grown organically and there is no chemical in the harvest process. Piarom's Date moisture is Less than other types of Dates (under %15) and figures are considered semi-dried. this kind of date has best tasting varieties of Dates, because this Date taste is sweet and has a unique delicious and indescribable test.


The thin skin of this date is dark brown. Since the seed and flesh are tightly attached, it has an attractive appearance which can be rinsed completely. And, as fructose is the predominant sugar in this type of date, it is easily and quickly consumed in metabolism of the body. Accordingly, it is recommended to the people suffering from diabetes.
Piarom dates promote digestive health and prevent certain cancers such as colon cancer and stomach cancer.

3) Sayer

Sayer or Stameran is the most abundant date species which accounts for 65% of Iranian dates. Around 40% of Iranian dates for export is Sayer dates. Along with Zahedi dates, they are the main variety of dates produced in Khuzestan province. They are one of the highest quality dates produced in Iran and, as such, have high export value. The most important specification of Sayer is being semi-dry (its moisture is around 16%). It is capable of storage for a longer period of time than other kinds of dates.

4) Kabkab

Kabkab dates are amongst the most important and abundant date varieties in south Iran. Typically, bigger than other kinds of date fruit, it is a high grade date that can be grown in the more tropical cities of Iran. Kabkab Dates is round in size, and the color varies from light brown to dark brown. It is soft in nature with moisture under %18. it is very delicious, sweet and full of syrup.


Kabkab dates are made up of 70% carbohydrates, mainly in the form of simple sugars, which make it one of the most naturally nourishing foods out there. Its high content of magnesium (±600 mg/1kg of dates) could also be very beneficial.
